THE QUEST TO BE A MAN - BULLJUMPING WITH THE HAMER

Stephanie Hunt April 29, 2015

(Near Turmi, in Ethiopia's Omo Valley)

The Hamer is the Omo Valley’s largest tribe. It has a long and staunch history of tradition and ceremonies.
For young men, the bulljump is their gateway into manhood. The ultimate challenge. In this age-old ceremony, the male (normally around 15) is required to shave off most of his hair, strip naked and then run over the backs of six or more bulls, four times.

A successful attempt means the young man is given an AK-47 and is considered man enough to marry and raise a family.

The ceremony also involves females from the young man's family being ritualistically whipped, which shows their devotion to the young man - a process which can be quite confronting for outsiders.

2008: Stepping into Syria’s ancient caravan city of Palmyra - in stupidly short shorts. The UNESCO heritage site was badly damaged when it was occupied by ISIS. Archaeologists are now working painstakingly hard to restore the site to its former glory.
Desert butcher. Not far from our roadside camping spot in Western Sahara. A place you don’t sit still in for too long - locals advised us to drive quickly through to the Islamic Republic of Mauritania’s capital, Nouakchott, as Al-Qaeda was operating on the roads after nightfall (sorry mum and dad!). Landmines were also a risk if you drove off course, so our rockstar driver @susieontour had to keep our vehicle strictly on the road. We reached Nouakchott, not knowing what to expect ... we were met with offers of cigarettes and booze and found Internet good enough to watch a few episodes of Game of Thrones.
Rollin’ with the darling new bambina. We took less gear with us to Africa! 🤣 Welcome to this wonderful, big, wide world, Matilda Mae.
The distinct beauty of the Himba tribe, Namibia.
‘Jessica!!!’ Our Friday night viewing is The Man From Snowy River.
We’re currently in the city listening to rain falling on a tin roof... wishing we were in the bush listening to rain falling on a tin roof. (Tom Burlinson snapped by @bennyontheroad during an epic stint of filming in the Victorian High Country.)
I feel so very honoured to have been interviewed by the wonderful @matttinney for his podcast Good Chat. Matt speaks with women from different backgrounds who have lessons and ideas to inspire his darling young daughter, Flo. We had an absolute ball - and were in stitches pretty much the whole way through. I haven’t laughed that hard in ages. Check it out (and many more brilliant episodes) and subscribe to Good Chat via Apple iTunes etc. Thanks Tinney!! You’re a great man.✌️
Top of Mt Kilimanjaro - the roof of Africa. Six days of climbing and filming on the tallest freestanding mountain in the world.
Ethiopia's salt miners.
DIARY ENTRY: 'We watch as the men dive deep into the black waterholes, holding their breath as they shovel salt into buckets. The salt looks like black sludge. It is bagged up and then carted up up a steep, rocky track via donkey. All for just a few dollars a day-but jobs are rare and the men must provide for their families. The high levels of salt burn the workers' eyes and skin. They show us cuts, rashes and scars. Their eyes are blood-shot and hard to keep open in the sun. The men make foam plugs to put up their nose and in their ears, but the work remains incredibly painful with dangerous long-term health effects.'
‘Inle Lake Fisherman’ - heading off to the printers/framers tomorrow for a very special order. This is one of our more calming photos, taken during an early morning paddle along Inle as the sun was rising over Myanmar.
Get set for some crazy kasbah action at the @bondimarkets tomorrow. We’ll have a stall packed with our photographic prints + vintage tribal rugs handmade by nomads in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran that we’ve responsibly sourced for @kasbahtrade + @bapribap’s wax print kids clothes from Senegal. It’s going to be wild. Come down and say hi if you’re around. It would be great to see you. 〰️✌️
